Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
