On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
